Currently, Sandra L. Gardner, RN, MS, CNS, PNP, is Director of Professional Outreach Consultation, a national and international consulting firm established in 1980. Ms. Gardner plans, develops, teaches and coordinates workshops on perinatal/neonatal/pediatric topics such as: legal issues, reproductive and perinatal grief and loss, children’s grief work, perinatal/neonatal program development and evaluation, neonatal/infant growth and development, physiologic care of the neonate, breastfeeding and lactation counseling.
Ms. Gardner graduated from Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in 1967 with a diploma. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (magna cum laude) in 1973 from Spalding College in Louisville, Kentucky. At the University of Colorado School of Nursing she completed a Master of Science degree with a specialty in Maternal-Child Nursing in 1975 and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in 1979. In 1978 she won the Gerald Hencmann Award from The March of Dimes for “outstanding service in the improvement of care to mothers and babies in Colorado.” Her achievements as a professional have earned her a citation in Outstanding Young Women of America (1979) and International Who’s Who in Medicine (1987), Who’s Who in American Women (1991 & 1992;1997-98;1999-2000;2001-2002), Who’s Who in America (1992;2000;2001;2002) ,Who’s Who in American Nursing (1990-1991; 1993-1994; 1996-97),Who’s Who in the West (1996-97;1998-1999;2000-2001), The World’s Who’s Who of Women(1997),Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care (1997-98;2000-2001) and Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals (1999-2000).
Ms. Gardner has worked in neonatal/perinatal care since 1967 as a clinician, practitioner, teacher, author, and consultant. In 1974, she was the first Perinatal Outreach Educator in the country funded by the National Foundation March of Dimes. She consulted with numerous NFMOD grantees to help them establish perinatal outreach programs. She taught physicians and nurses in Colorado and the seven surrounding states how to recognize and stabilize at risk pregnancies and sick neonates. In 1976, as Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado School of Nursing, she planned, coordinated and taught neonatal and pediatric continuing education workshops for nurses from all over the world. In 1978 she co-founded and was a Director of an alternative birthing center in Denver, Colorado. In 1980 she began Professional Outreach Consultation. In 1982 she was a founding Director of the Neonatal Nursing Education Foundation, a non-profit organization established to provide quality continuing education for neonatal/perinatal nurses. Ms. Gardner has had a long association with Lact-Aid International--on the medical consulting board since 1976; contributor to Keeping Abreast Journal (1978) and Director of Educational Services (1986).
Ms. Gardner’s writing achievements include a wide variety of articles, pamphlets, chapters, and book reviews. She is also co-editor with Gerald B. Merenstein, M.D., of Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care6th edition, 2006. The first edition (1985) and the fifth edition (2002) both won the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award. She has co-edited with Mary Hagedorn a book entitled Legal Aspects of Maternal Child Nursing Practice, 1997. Ms. Gardner is an active member of the Colorado Nurses Association/American Nurses Association, the National Association of Neonatal Nurses and The Academy of Neonatal Nursing. She is a founding member of the Colorado Perinatal Care Council, a state advisory council to the Governor and the State Health Department on perinatal/neonatal health care issues.
